Getting Ready for College Week

This was a fun but emotional week at our house. Cali's last full week home before we head to Provo this next week.

We did lots of getting ready to leave stuff. Which translates into lots of shopping!

All three girls got haircuts too - Cali has a DARLING new shorter hair do that we all love.

Tuesday night Cali and I went to a potluck dinner with a group of college bound girls and their moms. This group of girls have known each other since elementary school and played on the same soccer team through 8th grade - they are all now headed off to college. It was fun to get together again.

Wednesday was registration day at the high school for Tessa. I am grateful she still wants me to go with her - I think it was mainly so I could write all those checks! Her school ID picture turned out great which was really important.

Jim was out of town all week in Colorado and Idaho Falls. He got to spend a little time with his parents in IF which was nice. He got home Thursday evening and being the good dad that he is he got into the car 6:00 a.m. Friday morning to help Clark drive back to Provo.

We packed the car with as much of Cali's stuff as we could! Jim drove with him to Boise and then caught a plane back to Portland. Clark arrived safely in Lindon where he will be staying with David and Tricia until he can move into his apartment on Friday. Thank you David and Tricia for taking care of him for us!

Friday was a fun day. While at Girl's Camp this summer the Destiny Leaders and the Craft Leaders decided we need to have a Craft Room Tour. Three of the ladies have great craft rooms in their homes ( I am not one of them, sadly) and we wanted to see them. So the other three ladies(myself included) fixed lunch and we ate out in our garden and then we toured from house to house.

It was so fun - we had lots of fun talking, visiting and laughing and we even got to make a fun craft at one of the houses!

Logan spent the week in Newport Beach with Becca and her family having lots of fun. They spent time on the beach, shopping, and at Disneyland. They also had fun eating Sprinkles cupcakes and Pinkberry Yogurt! We are looking forward to seeing him next week when we get to Provo! We love you Logan!! We love you too Clark!!

This weekend was a busy one but it's almost midnight and I'm tired so I'll write another post tomorrow with some pictures of how we spent our weekend! Night!

Frolfing for Family Night

Wondering what Frolfing is?

It is frisbee golf or disc golf. Since we have discovered the disc course near our house we have played a few times - with really crummy frisbees. So for Jim's birthday we decided (Cali's great idea) to outfit him with his own frolfing equipment so he would fit in with all the other guys on the course.
Here he is with his new disc golf bag...

The whole family (minus Logan) played a round of nine holes for family night. Jim and Clark are good - the girls are bad!

I think we provided entertainment for everyone else that was there that evening.

The object is to keep throwing the disc along the course until you reach this basket - the basket is like the hole in golf - you want to get it into the basket in as few throws as possible.

Staying Cool - doughnuts, bowling and camping out

The theme of this week was "How can we stay cool today?"

We had several over 100 days this week and the rest of the week in the high 90's. We are just not use to that kind of weather around here! Needless to say, we spent a lot of time indoors watching the Olympics although the girls did make a few trips to the pool and I tried to heat up the oven as little as possible which means I didn't do much cooking!

One way to be "cool" in Portland is to go to VooDoo Doughnuts. Cali has had this on her Summer To Do list so after I met my Beach Babe friends downtown at Kell's Irish Pub for lunch on Thursday I decided to pay a visit to VooDoo Doughnuts, I heard so much about it. This is no Krispy Kreme!

It is a hole in the wall, in the somewhat "seedier" area of downtown Portland - right near Burnside and Old Town.

I think in order to work there you must have at least 6 body piercings and that many tattoos if not more. I guess the best word to describe VooDoo Doughnuts is "edgy". Their doughnut selection is pretty unusual - Here are a few of the items for their menu - I left off a few of the "edgier" doughnuts! They even have a maple bar with bacon on it!

Grape Ape
(raised doughnut with vanilla frosting and grape powder)
Dirt
(raised doughnut covered with vanilla glaze and oreo cookies)
Arnold Palmer
(cake doughnut covered with lemon and tea powder)
Butter Fingering
(Devils food, vanilla, and crushed Butterfinger)
Neapolitan
(chocoalte doughnut with vanilla frosting and strawberry quick powder)
Triple Chocolate Penetration
(chocolate doughnut, chocolate glaze, and cocoa-puffs)
Voodoo Doughnut
(voodoo doll doughnut)
Dirty Snowball
(chocolate cake doughnut covered with pink marshmallow glaze and surprise filling)
Apple Fritter
(apple/glaze/doughnut as big as your head)
The Memphis Mafia
(chocolate chips/banana/ peanutbutter/glaze big!)
Nyquil Glazed and pepto-bismol (currently on hold)
A doughnut so good we couldn't come up with a better name. It has chocolate rice crispys and peanutbutter on it.

I bought one covered in Captain Crunch, one with Fruit Loops on top and another a No Name - chocolate frosting, rice krispies and peanut butter. I also bought a Dirt doughnut - vanilla frosting with crushed up oreos.

So how else do you stay cool in Portland besides buy weird doughnuts?

You go bowling!

Saturday afternoon while Clark was up in Longview golfing, Jim, the girls and I headed to the bowling alley.

Our bowling alley recently was redone and it's quite spiffy! they have huge TV screens across the whole front of the lanes so we could watch music videos and the Olympics while we bowled and ate french fries.

Tessa wanted to bowl with bumpers but they told us you had to be under 12 to use them and then she went and got 4 strikes, she broke 100 and almost beat Jim the first game!!

The best part of the whole bowling experience was that I got to wear shoes with velcro closures!
All the adult shoes were too big for my midget feet so I had to wear children's shoes.

Here's our final scores for the two games we played. As you can see none of us take after Grandma Wilkes and her bowling skills!

Another way we have stayed cool this week is by sleeping outside. Last night Cali, Tessa and neighbors Hannah and Olivia decided to sleep out in our backyard. About 2:00 a.m. my sleep was abruptly disturbed by a crash of thunder. I got out of bed and looked out the bathroom window at the girls in the backyard - they seemed fine. A few minutes later a huge roll of thunder shook the whole house and then a crash of lightening.

I was out of bed and out the backdoor in less a minute to find Hannah waking everyone (Cali had slept through the whole thing) and getting them inside. They moved the sleepover into the living room. Not even waking Clark who was sleeping on the family room couch!

If the weatherman is right we are due for some cooler days and a little rain this week - yeah!
